Moisturizing vs. Sealing Oils

Seal the Deal

This is usually how my wash days go. The steps in your wash day are important to how your hair turns out, but what’s also important is how you moisturize your hair. Natural hair obviously needs water to be moisturized, but the oils in your regimen are just as important. The right oils at the right time in your regimen maximize the oils’ moisturizing properties.

The first time I use an oil in my wash day regimen is in step #2: Pre-Poo/Hot-Oil Treatment. If you incorporate hot-oil treatments in your regimen, it is important for you to use a moisturizing or penetrating oil. These oils are light and can penetrate the hair shaft to moisturize from the inside out.

Examples of Moisturizing/Penetrating Oils:
·        Avocado Oil
·        Olive Oil
·        Ucuuba Oil

The next time I use an oil in my regimen is in the LCO or LOC method. Whether you LOC or not, definitely use a leave-in conditioner (or some type of moisturizing liquid) and an oil to seal in moisture, or a good styler that seals in moisture. If you use an oil to seal, make sure it’s a heavier oil. Heavy oils work outside the hair cuticle to keep moisture in.

Examples of Sealing Oils
·        Flaxseed Oil
·        Sesame Seed Oil
·        Shea Oil

Moisturizing oils strengthen hair, improve elasticity, and retain moisture. Sealing oils condition, reduce frizz, and also retain moisture. Now there are some oils that can be used as both. One example is Coconut Oil. It’s a light, moisturizing oil, but also an excellent sealant. Castor Oil is another example.

Moisturizing Oils that can be Sealants:
·        Argan Oil
·        Sunflower Oil
·        Babassu Oil

(Light) Sealing Oils that can Penetrate the Hair Shaft:
·        Apricot
·        Grapeseed
·        Jojoba
·        Sweet Almond
As always, do what works best for YOUR hair! :)

Valentine’s Day French Toast: Another random recipe!

If you read my Pumpkin Spice French Toast recipe from Halloween, you know that this is going to be another random idea that I came up with (maybe one day I’ll plan these).  Today’s recipe features the berry flavored nutrition powder from Orgain. It’s full of probiotics and superfoods, and you can order it here  and use code ‘ gorjessnfit ’ for 30% off your first order. Other ingredients include: All of these are mixed together in a bowl, and then I take a slice of whole grain bread and soak it in the mixture for about a minute before putting it in the oven to broil at 525 degrees (Fahrenheit). The strawberries were on top of the toast when broiled, and the bananas were added afterwards. * Affiliate Disclosure * This post contains a link and I may earn a commission (at no extra cost to you) if you choose to purchase a product through the link.

Rose Hair Clay Mask Rose clay is very mild and gentle enough for dry skin. Also known as pink Kaolin clay, it’s color comes from the iron oxides in the clay.  This clay draws out toxins and impurities in the skin and hair. For my hair, I mix it with apple cider vinegar and essential oils (clary sage, rosemary, tea tree, and peppermint). I leave it on my hair for about 20 minutes and then rinse it off.
